Pony Boy also spent a lot of time examining his feelings and the feelings of others. Boys did not look at other boys and think how good looking they were, which this character does often. was while reading, I thought this book is going end up with the main character coming out of the closet. I WISH MY T-SHIRT WAS TIGHTER What she got wrong was the femininity she gave the main character. Even losing was not that important, you just needed to prove you were not a coward. It was part of growing up as a boy and proving yourself. I even remember having fist fights with friends, they were friends before the fight and they were friends after. Being tough was very important and you never wanted to show weakness. I was in elementary school and junior high during the sixties. It is amazing that it was written while she was in High School. Hinton was 18 when the book was published. Hinton was only 15 when she started writing the novel however, she did most of the work when she was 16 and a junior in high school.
